EU Referendum Campaign Party Poll 30 March 2011

Tory Voters Tell Cameron ‘we want a referendum’

A new ComRes poll for the EU Referendum Campaign, published today, shows that a large majority of Conservative and Liberal Democrat voters want their parties to commit to a referendum on continued EU membership.

In a week that has seen controversy over the UK’s exposure to a bailout of the Portuguese economy, the poll also found that fully two-thirds of the public oppose Britain contributing financially to it.

James Pryor, Chief Executive of the EU Referendum Campaign, said “Again, our polls show the disconnect between the politicians and the people. Both David Cameron and Nick Clegg should seriously consider asking their own parties how they feel on an in/out referendum. I am not sure whether it is sheer arrogance or just plain stupidity to ignore the wishes of their own supporters. What are they afraid of?”

Andrew Hawkins, Chairman of ComRes, said “The EU undoubtedly has a major image problem.  Fewer than one in three people feel Britain gets a good deal from being a member of the EU and almost half regard the EU as ‘fundamentally undemocratic’.  These are problems that, unless addressed, will be left to fester in the minds of the electorate.”
