Campaign for Euro referendum

Nikki Sinclaire MEP, Independent MEP for the West Midlands COULD I alert your readers to the campaign for a referendum on our membership of the European Union (www.haveyoursay.eu)? Britain is currently half in the EU and half out, and whatever your viewpoint, that is no good for ourselves or the rest of Europe.

Some people think Britain should come out altogether and go back to making our own laws and trading with whosoever we wish - being out of Europe doesn’t mean we couldn’t trade with them.

Other people think Britain should go further, transferring government from Westminster to Brussels and abandoning the pound in favour of the Euro.

Either way, those of us in favour of a referendum think it is something the people should be allowed to decide.
It is, after all, a far more important subject than “alternative voting” that was put to the public earlier this month.

The three main political parties think we can’t be trusted with such a decision, and that’s patronising, insulting and just plain wrong.

Nevertheless, the coalition government has said that any petition that secures more than 100,000 signatures will be eligible for a formal debate in parliament, and the campaign is already half way towards that target.

As an Independent MEP for the West Midlands, I believe we should be out of Europe completely, and we know there are plenty of people who vote for the main parties who agree on that point - it’s a shame their parties don’t! Key political figures, such as Kate Hoey (Labour) and Philip Davies (Conservative), have “broken ranks” and support the campaign for a referendum, though.

The English people are trusting, tolerant and generous, but history has shown that when we are pushed too far, we fight back, and when we fight back, we win! I would urge anyone for or against the EU who thinks we should be allowed a say on our membership to sign the petition.

DAVID Cameron was last night challenged to make May 5 the day that Britain decides whether to quit the European Union.

The Daily Express stepped up its crusade for the UK to cut ties with Brussels by calling for the planned referendum on electoral reform to be turned into a historic vote on EU membership.

Leading MPs and campaigners backed the move. Tory MP Peter Bone, of the Better Off Out group, said: “This is a splendid idea by the Daily Express. It makes absolute sense.

“If we are going to have a referendum at all, it should be on the question that everybody wants asked. It would be cost-effective and encourage a high turnout.”

The move would transform the planned referendum on whether to replace the current first-past-the-post system for Westminster elections with the “alternative vote”.

Voters are due to be given the choice on May 5, also the date of town hall elections.

Critics have branded the referendum on the voting system – costing taxpayers an estimated £250million a waste of time and money that will inspire little interest from the public.

Adding a question on Britain’s EU membership would, in contrast, spark passionate debate, at no extra cost.

Labour MP Kate Hoey said:

“Why not simply add a question on whether to stay in or leave the EU?

“It would cost virtually nothing more and would guarantee a huge turnout for something the British people fiercely care about. Surely it is time that the public get to have their say.”

Some want the electoral reform question to be dumped in favour of an EU poll. Euro MP Nigel Farage, leader of the UK Independence Party, said:
“Nobody asked for a referendum on the minutiae of how we vote for those who govern us. Millions wish to decide who governs us.
A referendum on membership of the EU will allow the people to decide who really makes decisions on our behalf.”

But Downing Street insisted that the issue of EU membership was not on the table. A spokesman said: “The Government believes that membership of the EU is in the national interest, and for this reason there will not be a referendum on whether we remain a member state.

“We do, however, believe that change and improvement are required from the EU, and we are confident in the UK’s ability to move the EU in the right direction.

“The UK will neither join, nor prepare to join, the euro during this time.”

Bridget Rowe, of the EU Referendum Campaign, hit back, saying: “What [voters] are interested in is having a say about Britain’s membership of the EU.

“The politicians have tricked and ­diddled us for too long. All three main parties promised us referendums on ­constitutional change in the EU but never delivered.”

And Tory backbencher Philip Davies said:
“Surely if we are going to have a ­referendum, it should be on something we want to vote about.

“When we joined the EU nearly 50 years ago, we thought we were joining a European free trade area, not agreeing to ­having our laws decided in Brussels.”

Whitehall sources insisted it was “too late” to alter the referendum question for the May 5 poll.

A spokesman for the Cabinet Office said:
“The referendum is now set in stone.”

The call for May 5 to become Britain’s day of destiny comes after the Daily Express delivered a 373,000-strong petition calling for Britain to quit the EU to 10 Downing Street in January.

Last night Mr Cameron finally responded to the petition, one of the biggest in newspaper history.

GAUNTY SAYS...

Spineless David Cameron may as well hoist the white flag over Downing Street.

In the last week he has surrendered over the EU budget rise and handed over at least another £450 million to Brussels despite the fact that 75 percent of Brits wanted a referendum.

He then has the temerity to brag that his actions were a tremendous success. This ludicrous boast is on a par with Saddam’s PR man, Comical Ali, who declared on live TV that Baghdad would not fall as American tanks were rolling down the streets behind him.

Not content with cutting15 thousand jobs in the armed services he now enters into deal with the French that paves the way for a Euro army.

Then he caves into The European court of human rights and says that there is nothing he can do about giving muggers, rapists and paedophiles the vote.

Of course there is something he could do.

He could listen to the British public, which in a ComRes poll last week stated by a massive 75 percent that they wanted a referendum on our continued membership of the EU.

By giving us that referendum we could leave this club but of course this wont happen because Cameron has now shown his true colours which by the way are not white but blue with gold stars.

Yesterday in Parliament in a direct response to a direct question from Labour MP Kate Hoey who asked “is there any chance of a referendum in the next five years on whether we stay in or go out?”

Comical Dave replied, “ I do not believe in an in-out referendum for many reasons. I think we are better off in the European Union.”

And only a few days ago he described him self as a Eurosceptic!

I could describe him as many things the most polite of which is a lying, conniving double dealing conman who has surrendered our great nations independence to an organisation that the majority of people do not want to be a part of and which three quarters of the population are at least demanding a straight forward in or out vote.

Come on Dave give us a vote, what are you scared of?
